Why Visualizing Doesn’t Work!!

Joel F. Wade writes a great column in the Oxford Club called “beyondWEALTH, THE ROADMAP TO RICHES.” In the latest issue, “The Shift in Focus That Can Turn a Wish Into a Triumph,” he talks about the scientific reasons “visualization” doesn’t work.

Gabriele Oettingen, professor of psychology at New Your University found that when we ONLY Dream about reaching our Goals, it is Relaxing and Comforting, but when we run up against the actual work it takes to even get started, we “Lose the Dream.” You see, Dreaming doesn’t account for the struggle, the effort, it takes to do anything. And every Dream or Goal takes Work and Time, and when you realize that, you become disheartened and lose the Intense Desire and Focus that the Dream gave You.

Gabriele found a technique called “Mental Contrasting” that gives you Huge Leverage in Accomplishing Your Dreams. She asked people to Dream of Their Success, and then immediately confronted them with the Obstacles, they would become energized and ready to dive into the Tasks! She found that You need to START with a Dream, but it has to be grounded in Reality. You need to shift Your Focus and go right into the Challenges and what needs to be Done. Doing so connects the Future with the Present and Motivates You to Get Started. Every task and every obstacle then becomes The Dream!

When Olympians do not focus on winning a Gold Metal, but on performing at their highest level, and what it takes to get there, they have a much better chance of Winning.

That shift in Focus will make the difference between a Wish and a Triumph!
